Wish everyone would take the time to read the truth about Christopher Columbus and his crimes against the Native Americans. God bless Bartolomé de Las Casas for writing this book regarding his first-hand accounts on the nature of the crimes against the Arawak tribe. I will say some sections of the book are unsettling to read.School textbooks depict Christopher Columbus as a great explorer and a man of tremendous quality. While future generations are introduced to the Great Admiral, they absently dismiss and distort the full truth of the atrocities orchestrated by his hand.
Columbus was a cruel and heartless individual that encouraged his men to rape, torture and murder Native Americans. If everyone read the truth this book provides, Columbus Day would become an erroneous celebration and the holiday would be eliminated of celebrating an individual who is unworthy.

The seminal documentation of the atrocities committed by the Spanish against the New World indigenous, all carried out in the name of God. It also provides insights into the background of those who carried out such deeds. A must read.
A first hand account translated into English the barbaric massacre of colored people. Not for the faint at heart. Understanding the mindset of the perpetrators, the description of inhumanity can be sickening. This book was suggested by Dr. John Henrik Clark for one's library. We must know the truth.
This book was written as an expose of the crimes committed against the Native Americans by the Spaniards. It was an appeal to the Spanish king to stop the horrific mass murders the Spaniards were conducting against the inhabitants of the Americas. Some exaggerations and historical inaccuracies are certainly present but the gist of it is a true account.
The work that inspired Lafayette and set in motion a series of cultural backlashes and revolutions, culminating in the American secession and the French revolution, de las Casas's work is brutal, difficult, and indispensable. Sure it is biased nearly to a fault, but understanding its bias as a counterpoint to the common view of the day shows how extreme, and extremely important, his work was. While the tinder of change had been gathering since the Enlightenment, "A Brief Account..." was surely one of the matches that lit the fire of liberty that burned the western world.
Few people read the full account of De Las Casas. Frequently this piece is referenced in excerpts in anthologies. However, should the reader want an authentic and direct account of the real events of the Spaniards' treatment of native peoples of the Carribbean and elsewhere, this is the narrative. This can be read in one sitting, and is clearly the work of an informed and intelligent writer. Some extremity of language is apparent, and the author's bias can be seen on nearly every page. For history junkies, this is a wonderful read.
A real classic. This book changed reality by describing the owful fate of the indian indigenous nations in Mexico, central America and the Carribeans at the beginning of the 16th century. The spanish conquest and rule of this countries should be considered - to the best of my knowledge and judgement - as the most savage and inhumane in all known history, as millions of people were murdered in a veraiety of horrible ways just to satisfy the spaniard's desire for gold and satsfaction from mass killings. After publication the reality improved a little bit. That is why De Las Casas is considered a hero in Latin America.
Literally speaking, the book is not very interesting, as it tells, time and again, the horrors and atrocities perpetrated by the spaniards in each region. I lacked a description of the way of life of these poor nations before and at the early stages of the spanish rule. I did not find any personal descriptions of the spanish rulers or of the indian victims.
As understated as his eyewitness testimony is, the unspoken horrors of the true Holocaust of the western hemisphere by the Spanish and her Marrano slave traders of at least 20 Million people is largely a story untold, covered up, to be forgotten. Never has such an evil befallen such a large number of ethnic peoples, nor as brutally. The Conquistadors were a living Hell for the indigenous peoples of the New World. The sadistic murderers who appeared on their shores knew no mercy or compassion. Only greed and murder fed their hearts in their unending quest for Gold & Silver.
